Nano-Nano

Last night my son asked me to make a cover for his nano. I'm sure there is probably a pattern or tutorial somewhere on the Internet...but that would take all the fun out of trying to figure out how to do it! Here are some pictures of the process...

First my son told me exactly how he wanted it to look and function. So we drew out a picture to make sure we were on the same page and discussed how we would go about making the openings, the flap, etc.

He got into my stash and picked out some fabric. We started out with 2 squares of fabric. (He wanted it to be 2 layers thick to give it more substance since we didn't have any heavy fabric.) It also made it easier to have a nice finished product with 2 layers.

I sewed two sides of a rectangle and turned it right side out for the flap on the top.

We centered the flap and sandwiched it in between the two squares with the raw edges aligned.

I stitched the seam with the flap inside. And then opened up the 2 squares of fabric, revealing the flap.

After that I marked where I needed to trim the bottom of the fabric squares to fit the ipod.

I made a template out of cardstock of where the openings would go. And used it to trace the cut outs onto the fabric.

For the rectangle opening I traced the rectangle onto the fabric then I cut an "x" in the rectangle from corner to corner. I folded the triangles that were formed from the "x" to the back. Then I topstitched around the opening and trimmed the back to the stitching line.

For the circle, you can see that I cut a hole in the main fabric (2 layers) and then placed a donut shaped piece of fabric on top, right sides together. Then I stitched 1/4 inch from edge all the way around and clipped the seam. Then I pushed the fabric through the hole to the back and pressed.

It made a very neat hole which I then topstitched around with a fun stitch and red thread (my son's request). And then I trimmed the excess fabric in the back to the stitching line.

Finally I stitched the the back seam and the bottom closed. (leaving one end open for the headphone jack to plug into the nano.) I had to hand stitch a running stitch around the bottom to hold the seam allowance from coming through the hole. We are planning to put some velcro on the flap to hold it closed.

Here it is! We are very pleased with the result!

Very cool, way to go Mom! Your son has a very talented designer right there to whip out what ever he requests. It looks great Tina, thanks for sharing the process.
