Doll Quilt Swap Update

Here are the "circles" I was telling you about. They really ended up being hexagons (or umbrellas really) for my doll swap quilt--"A Day at the Beach." I'm trying to decide if I should add some embellishments. As you can see I added beads to the umbrella tops. I'm trying to decide if I should add beads, ribbons, or anything at all to the water's edge.

Here are some beads I was trying out, but I'm just not sure about them.

I got up in the middle of the night to rescue some tulle I had in a bag to throw out. I thought it might just be the perfect thing to use, or some organza type ribbon. Any suggestions? I might wander around JoAnns to see if anything jumps out at me.

Hmmm, maybe I could do some quilting with some decorative/metallic thread? Now there's an idea! So many possibilities to explore. I hope I can sleep tonight!

That is so cute Tina. I like the idea of the metallic thread. It would add a shimmer to the water. I love the umbrellas!! Wow, don’t you hate to give it away?

It took me a minute to see "the beach", until you mentioned umbrellas. What a great idea. I love it!

bartlett fam: All you need is my blog address, so I think you're set if you want to add me to your blog. If you need help, go to my profile and e-mail me. I don't have any way to get a hold of you.

I love it - the little accent on the umbrellas is perfect and I love the idea of something metallic (i actually like the bead thing you had going on - sort of water foamy?) like when you are at the beach in the afternoon and all you can see when you look out is the reflection on the water.. so cute!

This is beautiful! Do you have a pattern or instructions for how to do the beach quilt? I really want to make one with beach ladies as a gift for my mom and her 5 sisters.

As you can see I pieced triangles into rows for the water with darker on the top edge and gradually changing to moving lighter as it gets closer to the sand. The triangles need to be equal (equilateral) on all sides. The sand was squares. They could be any size you choose them to be. My sand squares are a little darker by the water. I cut a curved line at the water edge, pressed the seam allowance under and layed it on top of the pieced sand and appliqued it with an invisible handstitch to attach. The umbrellas are equilateral triangles sewn into groups of 3 and then combining groups of three into 6 to make the umbrellas. They were also appliqued onto the surface of the quilt. I embellished with ribbon and beads. Hope this helps! Good luck and let me know if you try it!
