Baby Girl

010

I had a Jelly Roll of Moda Marble Pastels sitting on my shelf and a baby quilt that I needed to make up quick. I've had an idea floating around in my head for a while of making a quilt out of strips, either in a horizontal layout, or diagonal. So I decided to make that thought a reality in this simple baby quilt. I didn't feel like I had the time, but I wanted to give my friend a quilt, so I fit it in.

I started by taking the Jelly Roll (a roll of 2 1/2 inch fabric strips rolled together and tied), unrolling it and mixing up all the colors into a pile on the floor next to the sewing machine. I wanted to go with a random color pattern. So as I sewed, I just reached down and grabbed a strip without looking at the color. As long as it wasn't the exact same color as the previous strip, I just went with it.

Then Miss K and I left to visit my parents for a couple days. While I was visiting, we stopped into a quilt shop for another reason and my Mom ended up helping me find this cute pink fabric for the back. Thanks Mom!

It has some precious swirling sayings on it like "May you always know that you are loved." and "May you grow up to be gentle and strong in both character and life." And the little pictures on the back are so cute!

Miss K didn't really want to come into the fabric store, but she sure was glad she did. She is obsessed with dogs and puppies right now and her mean Mom won't let her have one. So she got to meet Lily, the shop's resident pet, and carry her around and play with her the whole time we were there. She even got to pick out some free fabric squares. I have a feeling she'll want to visit that shop again when we're at Grandma's!

Once I got back home I finished sewing the strips together and I quilted it with loops, like cursive e's along every other seam across the quilt. I hate to admit it, but I was trying so hard to hurry through this quilt that I really messed up on the binding. Luckily this is the type of quilt that I could just take my rotary cutter to it and cut off the half sewn on binding and start over. So much for being in a hurry!

I took my time to hand sew the binding on and it turned out so much better. I would have been embarrassed to give it away with the way it was turning out.

But in the end everything worked out, and it was very well received and hopefully will be well loved by that sweet new baby girl.

I will never cease to be amazed at what you can just "throw together" in a hurry. You really do inspire me. This quilt is so simple and so cute! I love the back. You have a gift for finding terrific fabric!
